Long before our beautiful barns echoed with the sound of laughter and music, the valley we are nestled in was alive with medieval farmers and shepherds guiding their flocks across the chalk ridges. The very slopes that surround us have offered shelter, sustenance, and celebration from ancient trade paths to quiet parish life beneath the Downs. Over the centuries, the land around us has transformed and is now a place of peace, beauty, and gathering. The patterns of the past still shape the view today, seen from our windows and watched from our lawns. The heritage of Long Furlong Barn isn’t confined to the bricks and beams that made us, but to the very landscape that surrounds us. As we pause for Remembrance Sunday, we wanted to s As we pause for Remembrance Sunday, we wanted to share a special piece of Long Furlong Barn’s story. The photograph below shows our barn many years ago, surrounded by rows of tents stretching across the Downs. In the 1930s, this very field was used as an army training camp, a place where young soldiers prepared for the challenges of a world at war. It’s humbling to think that the same space where people once trained and hoped for peace is now filled with love, laughter and new beginnings. Today, we remember all those who served and sacrificed, and we’re grateful for the peace and freedom that allow us to gather and celebrate here.
